Originally from Kokomo, Indiana and have lived in Mississippi and Connecticut.
I come from a "ham family"; Mom N9NKN, Dad ex-WN9PEY, Grandfather K9MXG (SK), Grandmother ex-KN9FVJ and N9NKM (SK), Uncle K9MXE. With the help of my grandfather and the 807 Club I passed my novice exam in 1988 and was licensed as KB9BTG.
I primarily operate HF CW and Digital Modes. One of these days I may learn to operate phone. DXing is my first passion.

Professional Life: From 2001-2006 I served as Communications Officer and Special Deputy for the Howard County Sheriff's Department (Indiana); 2006-2010 Communications Officer for University of Mississippi Police Department; 2010-2019 Emergency Preparedness Manager ARRL; 2019-2021 Senior Nutrition Services Director for New Opportunities Inc. In January 2021 I returned to my emergency management roots and currently serve as an Emergency Management Specialist at the federal level. I am also an adjunct instructor for the University of Mississippi. I am a member of the International Association of Emergency Managers and serve on the faith based caucus.
Volunteer Activities: Outside of Amateur Radio I spend a great deal of time doing volunteer work. Organizations I have worked or currently serve as a volunteer with include: Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Journey Home, American Red Cross, Loaves and Fishes (community kitchen), Foodshare, New London community meal program, The Open Hearth, National VOAD, and National Weather Service. I also serve as a volunteer with the Boston Marathon and Head of the Charles Regatta.
If I'm not doing ham radio stuff or volunteering, you're likely to find me fishing, trap shooting or hiking.
Operating achievements: 5 Band DXCC, DXCC (Mixed [336/328], Phone [311], CW [321], RTTY [217], and Challenge [1954]), WAC (Phone, CW, RTTY, 160 meters, and 5 Band), WAZ-mixed, WPX (Honor Roll Mixed, Phone, CW, Digital and WPX Award of Excellence), WAS CW/Phone/Digital and Triple Play, RCC, VUCC on 6 meters from EM54 and FN31, A-1 Operator, and a few contest certificates.
Portable operations: I often carry portable HF gear with me on my travels. All portable QSO's are uploaded to LOTW.
DX Operations - I have operated as 8P9IU, KI1U/VE9 (NA014/NB003), PJ2/W5MPC, CT8/KI1U, CE2/KI1U, and MM/KI1U (EU-008). Click the call for log search. All QSO's from these operations have been uploaded to LOTW. If you need a card QSL via the bureau or the home call. Direct QSL requests require 2 greenstamps or SASE.
QSL info : With the move to Rhode Island in March 2022, I have made the decision to transition to 100% electronic confirmations for home operations. I have some QSL cards left for the Connecticut QTH and Canadian operations. When the paper cards are gone, that's it! No more. All QSO's are uploaded to LOTW, Club Log and QRZ. If you send me a QSL card for a QSO after March 2022 it will be thrown in the recycling bin.
